Sacristans prepare for the Eucharistic celebrations. He or she takes care of the necessary preparations for the celebration of the Eucharist and other liturgical services.
They prepare the hosts and wine for consecration, help the Altar Servers, Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers and Lectors for any given service. Sacristans work closely with the Pastor, particularly for special worship services involving the celebration of the sacraments.
What specific duties are involved?
- arriving at the church at least 30 minutes prior to the start of Mass
- setting up the altar
- preparing the bread and wine,
- marking the liturgical books
- preparing the chalices and other items necessary for Holy Communion,
- assisting at the altar before the Consecration,
- filling in or asking for liturgical minister replacements if needed at Mass.
- cleaning up afterward and checking supplies.
