The primary role of the altar server (and acolyte) is to assist the presiding priest in the celebration of sacramental liturgies, principally the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. This is accomplished through specific learned tasks and by setting an example. Youth and teens who display a love of the Mass and a desire to participate in a personal way are chosen from among the faithful. It is a great privilege to serve the Mass in the sanctuary of the Church as our savior Jesus Christ becomes truly present in his Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity on the altar.
Servers worship and adore our Lord Jesus Christ at Mass. They pray and sing. They carry the processional cross and candles and hold the Roman Missal for the priest celebrant at his chair. They carry the incense and censer, assist the priest when he receives the gifts from the people, and present the bread, wine, and water to the priest (or deacon) during the Preparation of the Gifts. They assist the presiding priest with the washing of hands.
A server (or acolyte) is uniquely joined to the worship which takes place at God’s throne. With myriads of angels, he sings, “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!”
Interested in serving? There are two basic requirements for children who wish to serve:
1.) a boy or girl must have made First Confession and First Holy Communion, and
2.) he or she must be attending Sunday Mass regularly.
If you are interested in becoming an altar server or acolyte, please call our pastor at the parish office: (281) 324-1478.
